The Khopra Danda Trek with Khayer Lake is one of the most beautiful yet less crowded trekking routes in the Annapurna region of Nepal. It is a moderate-level trek that combines breathtaking Himalayan views, cultural exploration, and a spiritual journey to the sacred Khayer Lake. This trek reaches a maximum altitude of 4,660 meters, offering stunning mountain scenery without the heavy crowds found on other popular Annapurna routes.
The journey begins in Kathmandu and continues to Pokhara before heading towards Birethanti, where the trekking adventure starts. The trail passes through charming villages like Ulleri, Ghorepani, Swanta, and Ghandruk. One of the major highlights is the early morning hike to Poon Hill, one of Nepal’s most famous viewpoints, where trekkers witness golden sunrise views over the Dhaulagiri and Annapurna ranges.
From Swanta, the trail becomes quieter and more peaceful as you head toward Khopra Ridge. The ridge offers wide panoramic views of Annapurna South, Dhaulagiri, Nilgiri, and Machhapuchhre (Fishtail). Unlike commercial trekking routes, Khopra Danda is a community-based trek, meaning local villagers operate the lodges. This helps support local development and gives trekkers a deeper cultural connection.
The most challenging and rewarding part of the trek is the hike to Khayer Lake. Located at 4,660 meters, this sacred alpine lake sits at the base of Annapurna South. It holds religious importance for both Hindus and Buddhists. The hike to the lake involves steep ascents and high altitude walking, but the spiritual atmosphere and dramatic mountain views make it unforgettable.
This trek is perfect for trekkers who want a balanced combination of mountain views, cultural immersion, moderate adventure, and less crowded trails. It is an ideal alternative to Annapurna Base Camp while still offering world-class Himalayan scenery.
